App of The Week: Code Quest
How do you get girls into coding? Make it fun, make it a game, and make it good.
The push to get girls into STEM subjects, that is, Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths is a global revolution in children’s education.
Get a head start on STEM with this app that makes coding a game that they’ll actually want to play.
What’s It About? Code Quest is an app that aims to teach kids the basics of coding in HTML and CSS via easy to understand games.
The introduction section of the app takes the form of a story - Holly and Cody are in a cyclone that spits them out into ‘another world’, aka, the internet.
Here they meet a Pelican who guides them through learning how to code through simple games. This section is done in a narrated movie-trailer style story, which should engage most kids from the get go.
The Good Bits: Each game builds on the one before – so there is a natural progression of knowledge. The ‘coding’ is mostly done via drag and drop games, which makes it (mostly) easy to understand.
The game represents both genders through the characters of Holly and Cody, which is a positive step in gender equality.
The Not So Good Bits: If we’re going to be honest, Holly and Cody’s voices are a little…annoying. Lines like, “Hey y’all, will you help me code some HTML?” certainly don’t help. Plus, they’ll repeat their ‘encouraging’ commands over and over and over again if you don’t respond to a prompt quickly.
What It Teaches: Kids will learn the basics of creating and designing a website, like choosing colours, fonts, headings, and images. While these choices are made with simple drag and drop commands, they’ll also see what the actual written code looks like when they make their decisions – which is a good familiarisation to the ‘strange’ look of coding text.
Most Suitable Age Range: Kids need to be confident readers to tackle this app by themselves. So, depending on your kid’s ability, it’s suitable from about 6 – 8 years. If you have younger kids, we’d recommend starting their coding journey with The Foos first.
