Kids App of the Week: StartDOT Handwriting
Give your kids handwriting a special helping hand with this award-winning app!
What’s it About: StartDOT Handwriting is an award winning app designed for kids aged 5 and under to master handwriting skills.
Handwriting difficulties are overwhelmingly common in kids and are the most common reason for kids to be referred to an occupational therapist. Tricia McKenzie, herself a paediatric occupational therapist, developed her own technique to quickly conquer handwriting difficulties using stories and doodles. This app was created from her unique method.
The Good Bits: This app is not just for kids with handwriting problems – it’s a great and fun app that any kid can use and can practice their handwriting skills. We like that instead of just the usual tracing-a-letter interface, the app incorporates pictures and stories which make it really engaging.
We also love the fact that kids are given a wide range of error when first using the app – this means no frustration when it “doesn’t work!”, after a bit of practice, the settings can be adjusted to make it a bit harder in order to encourage progression.
As kids work through the app there is visual and aural feedback given in a really gently tone. This is all about building confidence!
The Not So Good Bits: The app is a little on the pricey side at $6.49 and is only available on the iOS platform.
What It Teaches: Handwriting skills – which incorporate fine motor skills, sensory integration, and visual perceptual skills.
Tech Info: iPad only
Most Suitable Age Range: Best for kids aged between 3 – 6 years, but also great for older kids who are having handwriting difficulties.
