Now You Can ‘Surf’ At Your Standing Desk! The Wurf Board Is Invented
Straight from the capital of cool – Santa Cruz, California – comes the Wurf Board, the first fully adjustable, air spring platform for standing desks that was inspired by the USA’s East Coast surfing culture and promises to banish boring from the workplace.
While the name may leave a bit to be desired (it’s a combination of the words ‘work’ and ‘surf’), it’s sure to inject some fun into your day, along with health benefits, and it looks pretty awesome too, if you ask me!
We’ve all heard that standing desks are supposed to be better for us than sitting in a chair all day, but the reality is that standing still for long periods of time can cause leg stiffness and aches, so you’re really just trading one set of ailments for another.
International trampoline maker JumpSport discovered this first-hand when they bought standing desks for everyone in the company, along with foam mats for them to stand on. The foam mats soon got turfed because people’s heels were sinking in and their knees locking, so an internal team at JumpSport came up with their own solution, and called it the Wurf Board. It’s a highly supportive yet responsive air spring surface made to feel trampoline-like (they’re playing to their strengths there!), and is based on an inflatable stand-up paddleboard that creator Mark saw at the beach one day.
Using the Wurf Board encourages standing desk users to make continuous micro movements, which in turn helps improve posture and circulation, strengthen feet, legs, core, and back, as well as raise alertness, focus, and productivity – the ultimate wish list for any employer.
The pressure in the Wurf Board can be customised anywhere from firm to bouncy, and it comes in three different sizes – small, medium and large. Most testers start off preferring the small, but as they get used to it and can perform more movements, they graduate up to the large. Unlike foam mats that compress over time, the Wurf Board is said to remain fully supportive even after years of use, and has a non-slip dimpled design that will grip all types of flooring when weight is applied to it.
The Wurf Board isn’t just for adults – kids get a kick out of doing their homework while standing up and ‘surfing’ too!
The Wurf Board is currently a Kickstarter campaign, but with almost half of its funds already raised and well over 5 weeks to go, it’s looking more than likely that this innovative product will hit the markets early in 2016.
I just have one thing to add … “Gnarly, dude!” I can’t surf (yet) but I’m sure going to pretend I can with my Wurf Board!
