Spidey Lady is Having a Baby: Meet the World’s First Pregnant Superhero!
Anyone who’s ever been pregnant knows that even the simplest things can feel like they take superhuman effort. When you’re hoisting around a huge belly, just rolling over in bed or putting on your shoes can seem like tasks that would put Superman to shame!
Now, the superhero world is finally reflecting real-life experience with Marvel Comics release of a new series of comics featuring a pregnant Spider-Woman!
The five part series of comic books follow Jessica Drew (aka Spider Woman) as she juggles her day job of private investigator and her night duties as a superhero with what we can only assume to be a serious case of swollen ankles. Jessica attempts to take some time off for her pregnancy and the newborn phase, but when the baddies just keep coming, what’s a pregnant superhero to do?
While all of this sounds pretty fanciful, some of the storylines are pretty true to life. In one of the books, while Jessica is waiting for a check-up at the hospital she spies some baddies and is forced to kick some major butt. I know many a pregnant woman who would happily be kicking some butt if they lost their place in the endless queue to see the doctor while pregnant!
The mastermind to this awesome story arc is Dennis Hopeless, a comic book writer and dad to twins, who was inspired to write the series after going through pregnancy and newborn phase with his wife Jessie. When he initially pitched the idea to Marvel, they laughed it off, but Hopeless ended up convincing them that it would be a great idea.
We love that book five of the series covers Spider-woman as a single Mum, who, despite her superhero badass-ery, is totally floored by her little bundle of joy. If nothing else, it’s comforting to know that even superheroes can get their butts kicked by babies too.
What do you think is easier – superhero duties or your super-parenting duties?
