Stick ’Em Up!: Sticker Collecting Is Back!
In the mid-1980s, one of the best things in my life was to go to the shops and pore over rolls of stickers. There were thousands of them and they were all so tempting! The aim was to fill my album with the widest variety of stickers I could find, meaning any type of sticker was fair game, even ones from big corporations whose names I couldn’t pronounce. But the pinnacle of any collection was the ‘Scratch ‘n’ Sniff’ stickers. I swear I can still smell them now, even though my sticker album has long disappeared.
On weekends, I spent hours rearranging my stickers and carried my album with me everywhere so I could compare collections with friends and sometimes even partake in some serious sticker negotiation and swapping. It was such a simple joy, and a relatively cheap hobby too, so recently I was excited to discover that sticker collections are back in fashion for our Gen Z and Gen A kids.
Pipsticks is a subscription serviced based out of California in the USA. Once a month, subscribers worldwide receive a sticker pack in the mail. While it’s not quite the same thrill as hunting for your own stickers in a store, it does give kids the rare experience of waiting for a package via ‘snail mail’ and the buzz of opening the letterbox to find an envelope with their name on it. (Even I still love that feeling!)
The company was founded by Maureen Vazquez, who also had fond memories of her own childhood sticker collecting in the ’80s. She started Pipsticks not only with children in mind, but also for adults who are into crafting, and her subscribers (who come from over 50 different countries) span all ages, from toddlers to grandparents. Reflecting this, there’s a Kids Club and a Pro Club, the latter being perfect for sticker-loving adults.
Each month’s pack comes with stickers that are high quality and sourced from countries around the globe by designers, which gives subscribers access to cool stickers they wouldn’t otherwise come across. Maureen makes sure there’s great variety – think puffy, glow-in-dark, glittery, and smelly just to name a few – and also includes some paper products each month to help with art and craft inspiration for those who aren’t putting their stickers into an album.
Just browsing the website makes me pine for my childhood – the bright colours and huge variety bring back an immediate sense of excitement that I want to share with my daughters and their friends.
