It’s not easy being green: after 27 years, Kermit the Frog loses his croak!
It’s a risky thing being a Gen Xer and admitting you don’t like ‘The Muppets’. In fact I’m sure there are plenty of people who would argue it’s bordering on a criminal offence that my young daughters know next to nothing about the iconic TV show purely because of my disdain for it. Before you judge me, hear me out – it’s a puppet thing. They flat out freak me out! (I blame it on my much older brothers and sisters, who amongst their many pranks and taunts instilled a fear of marionettes in me – thanks guys, top work).
So while the sight of Miss Piggy sends me fleeing from the room, there came some news this week that distressed even my hardened heart: the only Muppet for whom I have a soft spot will never be the same again… that adorable little green amphibian, Kermit The Frog, now has a different voice! Yes, after 27 years, Kermit’s voice actor Steve Whitmire has quit.
This end of an era is tugging at the heartstrings of grown ups the world over, with Kristen, a mother of two, declaring she will wear black for a week in respect for Kermit’s old voice, while Yvette summed it up with the message, “What is this witchcraft? Kermit has a new voice? This is NOT COOL!”
Back in 1990, after the death of Jim Henson (Kermit’s creator and original voice master), it was an easy decision for the Henson family to personally appoint Whitmire into the role, given he had been working on ‘The Muppets’ since 1978. Now, sadly, almost three decades later, it is no longer.
While no specific reason has been given for Whitmire’s departure, Kermit fans need not worry – he won’t be silent for long, with current Muppets performer Matt Vogel hopping into the ‘ribbeting’ role.
His first appearance as Kermit will be in a ‘Muppets Thought of the Week’ video to be aired in the USA next week.
Hopefully Vogel will be as ‘Kermit-ted’ to this special post as his predecessor was – after all, he has some really big webbed feet to fill!
