Australia’s first cinema for kids! Vjunior Cinemas

One of the most magical experiences of childhood is undoubtedly a trip to the cinema, and Village Cinemas has made it even better with the introduction of their new concept – Vjunior. It’s cinema for kids, designed by kids, and it’s brilliant!

Vjunior cinemas are currently at two locations in Victoria (Southland and Fountain Gate) with a third opening at Knox soon, and they’ve partnered with Mattel to inject even more fun into your day at the flicks.

While technically Vjunior is aimed at the little movie lovers in your family – the 3 to 10-year-old crowd – even our 13 and 14-year-old girls admitted out loud that they loved it! Each time there’s mention of a movie outing, the cries go up, “Can we go to Vjunior?”

There’s so much that makes Vjunior an attractive option for both kids and parents. For starters, there’s the cool seating. Choose from standard, beanbag (our preferred option) or reclined lounge – they’re allocated when you book your tickets so there’s no sibling biffo once you arrive in the cinema. Yay to that!

The movies on offer are the new release family films, but the difference is there’s modified volume, low level lighting, plus a 10-minute intermission which gives everyone a chance to make a toilet stop, reload on food and drinks or enjoy a play on the in-cinema slide. Yes, I said in-cinema slide! And what a magnificent specimen it is. There’s not even an age limit, so if they’re game, the adults can slip off their shoes and whizz down the tunnel too! It’s also open for 10 minutes before the movie starts, giving you a reason to hustle instead of timing your entrance so you’ll miss the ads (or is that just my excuse for being late?)

If busting moves instead of limbs is more your thing, there’s a light-up dance floor at the front of the cinema. We all know the irresistible lure of dancing in the light of the silver screen, and now there’s a proper platform for it.

Also available 30 mins before the movie in the Vjunior foyer is a dedicated play area with a collection of Mattel’s Hot Wheels tracks and cars, plus a Mega Blocks wall, a Scrabble wall and interactive digital screens where kids can colour in Vjunior characters, scan them and watch them up on the large screen.

Perhaps my favourite feature, however, is the coffee and snack cart conveniently located right outside the cinema door. It has delivered my much-needed caffeine boost on several occasions, and its special kids’ menu includes items such as chicken strips with carrot sticks, margherita pizzas, cheeseburgers, fruit snacks and milkshakes at affordable prices.

Vjunior has proven to be Melbourne's latest and greatest child-friendly entertainment destination. If you’re reel-y lucky, it’ll be coming to a cinema near you soon!
